homeless protest
Homeless advocate, Rachel Graham, and her dog Faith, nap on the lawn by at Washington Square along with a dozen other supporters, Thursday, May 6, 2010. In Salt Lake City it is illegal to put a blanket on the ground at a public park, or other public place, and take a nap. This law prevents some homeless people from having a legal place to sleep-- day or night. The goal for this event is to highlight constitutional problems with this law and convince the Salt Lake City Police Department and Mayor's Office to adopt a "No shelter beds available, no ticket" policy for enforcement of its camping ordinances and to study alternatives to criminalizing homelessness.
